■ 서울식물원 기획전시 《리듬: 둘로 존재하는 것으로》

서울식물원은 식물문화에 대한 사유와 생태 감수성 공유를 위해 다양한 장르의 현대미술 전시를 개최해 왔습니다. 2024년에는 기존의 전시 공간(식물문화센터 프로젝트홀2, 마곡문화관)과 더불어 온실과 주제원까지 확장하여, 네 곳의 장소에서 네 가지 색(色)의 작품을 담아낸 기획전 《리듬: 둘로 존재하는 것으로》를 개최합니다.

《리듬: 둘로 존재하는 것으로》는 전시 공간의 장소성을 기반으로 공간과 조화하며, 자연을 더불어 지금을 이루는 존재들 간에 만들어지는 흐름결, 즉 리듬에 대해 상기해 보는 기회를 만들고자 마련한 전시입니다. 전시의 부제인 ‘둘로 존재하는 것으로’는 루스 이리가레(Luce Irigaray)와 마이클 마더(Michael Marder)의 서신으로 엮인 저서 『식물의 사유(Through Vegetal Being)』 중 제14장의 제목에서 일부를 가져온 것으로, 인간 외의 존재들을 인간 주체의 기능적 대상이나 생산성을 위한 이용의 대상으로 바라보지 않고 존재 자체로서 인식하고 인정하는 것에서 시작하는 ‘조화’에 관해 이야기 합니다. 이번 전시는 박이 모여 박자가 되고 박자가 모여 흐름결, 리듬이 만들어지는 것처럼 자연적, 인위적 존재들 간의 조우를 통해 만들어지는 새로운 리듬을 서울식물원 속 네 곳의 장소에 구현하고자 했습니다. 로비형 전시실, 온실, 야외 정원, 문화재까지 네 가지 유형의 특성을 가진 전시 공간에 네 개의 섹션으로 구성되며, 녹음·박봉기·스튜디오 1750·이병찬 작가와 함께 합니다.

Seoul Botanic Park has hosted varying genres of contemporary art exhibitions to contemplate botanic culture and promote ecological awareness. In its 2024 exhibition, Rhythm: Being Two in Nature, the Park expanded its exhibition spaces from two to four by adding Greenhouse and Display Gardens to the preexisting ones (Botanic Center Project Hall2, Magok Cultural Hall), with each space featuring artists of four unique hues.

Rhythm: Being Two in Nature aimed to create spatial harmonies by drawing upon the placeness of each exhibition space and hoped to provide the experience of reflecting upon rhythm as the fabric connecting nature and other concurrent beings. The phrase ‘being two in nature’ in the title was adapted from the title of Chap. 14 in Through Vegetal Being, a book created from the correspondence between Luce Irigaray and Michael Marder. The book discusses a harmony that arises from recognizing and accepting nonhuman beings as what they are rather than viewing them from the human-centric objects of function or productivity-focused objects of usefulness. Just as how beats come together to become a tempo and tempos come together to form a rhythm, we hoped to create new, unique rhythms by bringing natural and artificial beings together at four different places inside the Park. The exhibition’s four unique spaces — a lobby exhibition hall, greenhouse, outdoor garden, and cultural heritage — host the artists nogm, Park Bonggi, Studio1750, and Lee Byungchan in four different sections.
